About Us
Our History
During WWII Edward “Eddie” Mokhiber, a Lebanese immigrant to America, volunteered for service in the United States Army. He left behind his wife and infant son to serve his country. Eddie served honorably in the European Theater, though like most from the Greatest Generation, he rarely spoke about the war. Upon his return to Albany, he was unsure how he would provide for his family, as his grocery store had closed during his absence serving abroad. But soon an opportunity arose: New York State was issuing new liquor store licenses to veterans. Eddie and his wife Lorraine opened Mokhiber’s Liquor store in 1945.
Eddie ran the store until his death in 1975. His oldest son Eddie Jr. operated the store until 1986. After he moved on, his youngest brother Rick managed the business until his untimely death in 2007. Eddie’s middle son Larry took on operating the store at that time. Larry quickly brought in his niece Lori to act as manager, a role she has been in ever since.
In 2016, Larry, Kathy, and Lori Mokhiber worked to build a new building adjacent to the former building. This modern establishment has allowed the family business to better thrive in our very competitive business. Today our business is the oldest family-owned liquor store in Albany.
We are proud to continue honest and fair service to our community in the same manner as our founders---Eddie and Lorraine.
